Hempstead Patrol
The toads are trying to get to Rookery Pond on the south side of the
road but many tend to use the roads as an easy route to travel and are
hemmed in by steep banks near the pond, which means that each passing
car can kill many toads.
A patrol started here in 2012 and rescued 1451 toads and 40 frogs,
which we thought was a terrific result. By 2015 we were saving over 3000
toads which shows that the patrol really helps the local toad population
to flourish. We’re not sure how many toads use the pond but it’s clearly
many thousands.
We are always happy to welcome more helpers for the patrols, please
see the contacts page for how to
get in touch.
